Psychonauts 2 is an upcoming platform video game being developed by Double Fine Productions. The game was announced at The Game Awards 2015 ceremony, and is planned for release sometime after 2018.

Double Fine and game director Tim Schafer had expressed desire to create the sequel to Psychonauts, but the financial demand of developing the game stalled any serious attempt. After strong sales of the original through various outlets along with strong demand from the fanbase of the original game, Double Fine sought to acquire part of its financial capital to fund the developments of Psychonauts 2 through a US$3.3 million crowd-funding and investment drive through Fig, launched simultaneously with the game’s announcement. The campaign raised a total of nearly US$4 million by the beginning of 2016.

Shenmue III is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Neilo and Ys Net. It is scheduled to be published by Deep Silver in August 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Windows. The story continues teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki’s quest to find his father’s killer in 1980s China.

Director Yu Suzuki conceived Shenmue as a saga spanning multiple games. The first two games were developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for the Dreamcast in 1999 and 2001 respectively. The original Shenmue was the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of over US$47 million, though this also covered some of Shenmue II and groundwork for future Shenmue games. Despite attracting a cult following and appearances in several “greatest video games of all time” lists, the games were commercial failures and Shenmue III spent over a decade in development hell.

At the June 2015 E3 conference, following years of speculation, Suzuki launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund Shenmue III, with Sega having licensed Shenmue to Suzuki’s company Ys Net. The campaign met its initial target of $2 million in under eight hours, making it the fastest Kickstarter campaign to reach that amount. It ended in July 2015 having raised over $6 million, making it the highest-funded video game and the sixth highest-funded campaign in Kickstarter history.

Skull & Bones is an upcoming action video game developed by Ubisoft Singapore and published by Ubisoft for release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019. The game revolves around piracy and naval warfare.

Sea of Thieves isn’t the only open-world pirate game out there – Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones is also setting sail this year, with a much more realistic take on pirate battles on the high seas. Skull and Bones is basically Assassin’s Creed Black Flag without the Assassins, as it’s being developed by much of the same team behind Black Flag, and promises a sweeping solo campaign as you vie for control over the 18th-century waters in the Indian Ocean. But the real focus looks to be player-versus-player ship skirmishes online, where each player controls their very own warship in team-based fleet battles. There will also be supernatural elements amidst all the cannon-fire, like the colossal tentacles of a terrifying kraken lurking in the deep.
